چکیده

We revisit the problem of why stars become red giants. We modify the physics of a standard stellar evolution code in order to determine what does and what does not contribute to a star becoming a red giant. In particular, we have run tests to try to separate the effects of changes in the mean molecular weight and in the energy generation. The implications for why stars become red giants are discussed. We find that while a change in the mean molecular weight is necessary (but not sufficient) for a 1M star to become a red giant, this is not the case in a star of 5M . It therefore seems that there may be more than one way to make a giant.

We consider the origin of the so–called S stars orbiting the supermassive black hole at the very center of the Galaxy. These are usually assumed to be massive main–sequence stars. We argue instead that they are the remnants of low–to– intermediate mass red giants which have been scattered on to near–radial orbits and tidally stripped as they approach the central black hole. Such stars retain on...

Discovery of Super-li Rich Red Giants in Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies

Stars destroy lithium (Li) in their normal evolution. The convective envelopes of evolved red giants reach temperatures of millions of K, hot enough for the Li(p, α)He reaction to burn Li efficiently. Only about 1% of first-ascent red giants more luminous than the luminosity function bump in the red giant branch exhibit A(Li) > 1.5. Nonetheless, Li-rich red giants do exist. We present 15 Li-ric...

Red giant stellar collisions in the Galactic Centre

We show that collisions with stellar–mass black holes can partially explain the absence of bright giant stars in the Galactic Centre, first noted by Genzel et al. (1996). We show that the missing objects are low–mass giants and AGB stars in the range 1 − 3M⊙. Using detailed stellar evolution calculations, we find that to prevent these objects from evolving to become visible in the depleted K ba...

Thermohaline mixing in low-mass giants

Thermohaline mixing has recently been proposed to occur in low mass red giants, with large consequences for the chemical yields of low mass stars. We investigate the role of thermohaline mixing during the evolution of stars between 1M⊙ and 3M⊙, in comparison to other mixing processes acting in these stars. We confirm that thermohaline mixing has the potential to destroy most of the He which is ...
